A note from Dr. Ali about dental insurance:

It's a misnomer; ‘a wrong or inaccurate use of a name or term’. You don’t have dental insurance. You have health insurance, car insurance and homeowners insurance. But with dental, there is no deductible that you need to hit before they will start covering the remaining costs you may incur. Dental insurances offer what we call discount plans. Think of it as a coupon book, with block out dates.

Most dental insurances offer higher reimbursements towards procedures that may or may not be the best choice for you (such as a filling, but your tooth really needs a crown at this stage), but will influence your decision because it may be ‘covered’. They are in the business of making money, we are in the business of what is best for you. Your insurance company did not look in your mouth, we did, and trust us when we will tell you, we know what's best for you, the final choice on how to proceed being ultimately yours, we are here to educate and follow through.

It is better to consider an in house membership plan with a dentist you trust which will often cost you the same as what your employer is charging for if not less, and, what is most likely the cheapest plan that they can purchase for their employees. This allows your dentist to take better control over guiding you down what is going to be your best path, and not be dictated by what insurance may or may not cover, to then only cap out after approximately $1500 anyways (this number has remained the same since the early 1970’s). After doing the math, you will realize it ends up being the same whichever route you choose, but with one being much less frustrating for all parties to deal with.
